MAGPIE Greenhouse Gas Tool

GHG tool calculates transport supply chain emissions, supports CSRD reporting, and evaluates emission reduction measures. This is tool 4.1 within the MAGPIE project.

Alternative fuels

Introduction

The greenhouse gas (GHG) tool enables the user to calculate the Greenhouse Gas emissions of port related transport activities at different levels. The tool has two main aims: to calculate the current carbon footprint of transport activities towards and from the port, that can be used as part of their environmental reporting (for instance for CSRD) and to assess the effect of different emission reduction measures. The tool takes into account the GHG emissions of all elements of the transport supply chain, including maritime transport, hinterland transport via road, rail and inland shipping and transshipment activities and is available for all types of freight transport.

Value proposition

  • Problem

Ports are often required by their stakeholders and by EU or national legislation to give insight in their environmental performance. This requires detailed insights in the emissions of all transport activities from and towards the port, including maritime and hinterland transport. Getting this insights can be time consuming, since it requires both detailed data insights as well as in depth knowledge of GHG calculations.

  • Opportunity

This tool enables port stakeholders to calculate the carbon footprint of their transport related activities (scope 3 in CSRD).

  • Opportunity

The tool furthermore gives insight in the effects of different emission reduction measures.

Port applicability

The tool is directly suitable to use in all Dutch Seaports and can be extended to all European Seaports. This would require some work on gathering data/ making assumptions for hinterland traffic. The tool can also be applied to inland ports, but their transport network is often more simple, which makes the tool less applicable and necessary.

Detailed description of the solution

  • Aims to implement modelling and prediction capabilities to facilitate emission reduction related to the efficiency of operations, fuel, and modal shifts at operational and strategic levels.

  • Operational decision support for low-emission logistics

At the operational level and in compliance with international standards (EN, ISO 4083), emission information can be used in situational decision-making allowing evidence-based selection of the least polluting transport options (e.g. synchro-modality, carrier choice, routing).

  • Strategic decarbonization scenario assessment

At the strategic level, it will assess the impact of decarbonization measures and provide evidence-based assessment functionality for analysis of trends, innovations, and policy measures.

  • Emission data gathering and analysis process are approached in a structured way

Transport chains related to the port are split into uniform transport chain elements, per modality and per cargo type. The tool will deliver for each transport chain element, GHG emissions per ton-km or ton The tool makes computations following the EN16258 standard and will comply with the ISO 14083 standard on quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions arising from the operation of transport chains.

  • Transport modes that are included are road, rail, inland waterways, and maritime transport

  • The goods will be considered in an aggregated level of classification such as dry bulk, liquid bulk, containers, etc.

  • Based on the defined scope, the GHG emissions and performed ton-km per mode in the transport chain are going to be calculated

  • Besides the business-as-usual scenario in the base year, the tool will provide forecasts up to 2050 taking into account demand growth factors and possible developments in emissions legislation in the European Union

In this sense, decarbonization measures will be considered for the scenario analysis, including logistics measures such as modal shift and optimization of consolidation rates, as well as technological measures such as energy efficiency improvement and alternative fuels/energy sources.

  • Scalable port emissions intelligence solution

The geographic scope of the tool comprehends firstly the Port of Rotterdam as the lighthouse port. The tool can be extended to other ports if the necessary data is provided.

Port Requirements

Data is the main requirement of the model. For maritime transport, use of the detailed port throughput data that is available on Eurostat is sufficient. This data needs to be complemented with insights on the hinterland transport network.

How to implement?

The tool is currently operated by TNO, but can be implemented for different ports.
