Port Environmental Impact Calculator

Electrification

Introduction

The Port Environmental Impact Calculator (PEIC) is a self-assessment tool from the EU Green Inland Ports project that quantifies the environmental impact of inland ports. It provides results for the whole port, the port authority and individual activities, supporting environmental benchmarking and continuous improvement.

Value proposition

  • Calculate environmental impact

The calculator is the first tool that enables users to calculate the environmental impact of a cluster of different port-related activities.

  • Robust environmental baseline

It provides a robust environmental baseline from which emission hotspots can be identified to help port authorities and companies prioritise measures to reduce their environmental impact and monitor progress over time.

Port applicability

Applicable to virtually all inland ports, especially landlord ports.

Groups of innovations

  • Port-wide footprint

  • Activity-based footprint

  • Scenario analysis

  • Recurring monitoring

Impact

Impact level per aspect
ImpactLevelRemark
Environmental impactMedium impact
The direct impact of the tool is limited, but when hotspots are identified and measures are taken, the impact can be high.
Stakeholder cooperationLarge impact
Cooperation among stakeholders (mainly port tenants) is required to get valuable insights. The tool can be a way to mobilize stakeholders on this topic.

Port characteristics

The tool can be applied across different port governance models and operational settings. Ports may start with the activities and stakeholders for which data are readily available and expand the assessment over time. Early engagement with tenants and operators helps establish the scope, facilitate data sharing and encourage participation.

How to implement?

  1. Step 1

    Define scope

  2. Step 2

    Collect data

  3. Step 3

    Calculate impacts

  4. Step 4

    Identify hotspots

What should a port do in the next 3 years?

Implement annual self-assessments, improve data quality, integrate the assessment into sustainability strategy and reporting.

Investment overview

Capital expenditure is mainly related to data systems across all participating stakeholder organisations. Operational expenditure is related to staff time for annual data collection and stakeholder engagement.

Stakeholder overview

Port authority, terminal operators, tenants, logistics providers, vessel operators, municipalities, environmental authorities, energy suppliers, IT providers.
